Andrew was born and raised in Aldershot, attending Farnborough (Hants) Grammar School. He was a member of the parish church choir, ran his own wind ensemble and was principal oboe with Hampshire County Youth Orchestra.
On leaving school he attended University of London Goldsmith’s College, studying oboe, here he obtained his LRAM and teaching qualification. This was followed by a post certificate course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama obtaining a Certificate of Advanced Studies.
On leaving college Andrew played as a freelance with groups such as The English Music Theatre Company, Philomusica and at the National Theatre. Also recitals and concertos at the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and St Martin’s in the Fields as well as numerous ‘Pit ‘and orchestral engagements.
Andrew spent five years with the Royal Artillery Band at Woolwich playing for many State Occasions. Since leaving the Royal Artillery Andrew has been in great demand as Musical Director for Stage Shows - over 90 in all. Societies have included – Grosvenor Light Opera, Colchester Operatic, Chelmsford Operatic, Southend Operatic as well as shows for Hulviz, Lewisham, Utopians, Dartford, Thames Poly, Erith, Eldorado and Ferrier Operatic Societies. Shows have included Carmen, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, The Producers, all the major Gilbert and Sullivan’s (including Grand Duke) and Rogers and Hammerstein’s winning a number of awards.
Teaching has included 25 years at Goldsmith’s College working with Graduate and Post - Graduate Students, Bexley Music Services, Townley Grammar and Bird College, as well as repairing woodwind instruments and oboe reed making.
In his spare time Andrew likes to conduct a spot of gardening and can often be seen ‘Twitching’ at Rainham Marshes. He is also keen on Cricket and supports long suffering Aldershot Town Football Club. He is also proud to have two children and four grandchildren.
